OBJECTS

Culture, made tangible.

Exploring how material, craft and cultural memory can take tangible form in contemporary life.

ABOUT OBJECTS

Where culture takes tangible form.

At Guanyi, an object is more than something to be displayed or owned. It can carry knowledge — through the material from which it is made, the skills that shape it, the ways it is used and the memories that gather around it.

We approach objects as another way of encountering living heritage: looking closely at how cultural knowledge can move from practice into form while remaining connected to the contexts from which it comes.

This means beginning not with the idea of a product, but with the cultural relationships that give an object meaning.

MATERIAL & MAKING

From material to everyday life.

Every object begins with relationships between material, knowledge and use. Looking closely at how something is made also means understanding what it is made from, how form emerges through practice and how it enters people's lives.

  1. Material

Materials carry their own qualities, histories and cultural associations. Understanding them is part of understanding the objects they become.

  2. Craft

Making brings knowledge into practice — through skills, judgement and ways of working that may be learned and refined across generations.

  3. Form

Form grows from the relationship between material, making and purpose, shaping how an object is encountered, handled and understood.

  4. Use

Objects continue through use. In everyday life, they can gather meaning, memory and new relationships with the people who live with them.

CULTURAL CONTEXT

More than an object.

An object does not exist in isolation. Its meaning can be shaped by where it comes from, the materials and knowledge involved in its making, the ways it has been used and the cultural practices that surround it.

Understanding these relationships allows us to look beyond appearance alone — towards the stories, skills and ways of life that give an object its particular place within a culture.

At Guanyi, this context matters. It is what connects an object to the wider landscape of living heritage, and what allows its contemporary form to remain part of a longer cultural conversation.

OBJECTS AT GUANYI

A collection taking shape.

Guanyi Objects will grow gradually from the cultural traditions, materials and stories we explore. Rather than beginning with a catalogue, the collection will take shape as meaningful objects and collaborations emerge from this continuing work.

  1. Craft Works

Objects whose materials, making and cultural context offer a meaningful connection to living craft traditions.

  2. Collaborative Objects

Objects that may emerge through thoughtful collaboration with craftspeople, designers and cultural practitioners, bringing different forms of knowledge into conversation.

  3. Guanyi Objects

Objects developed through Guanyi's own cultural research and projects, where a tradition or story finds an appropriate form for contemporary life.

Object stories will enter here.

LOOKING FORWARD

Objects for contemporary life.

Living heritage continues not only through what is remembered, but through what people continue to make, use and value.

As Guanyi Objects develops, we hope to explore how cultural knowledge can find thoughtful forms in contemporary life — creating objects that remain connected to the materials, practices and stories from which they grow.

The aim is not simply to bring tradition into the present, but to create space for meaningful relationships between heritage, objects and everyday life to continue.
