About the Studio

Cultural research, shaped through creative expression.

Guanyi Studio is the creative practice within Guanyi, exploring how cultural research and heritage stories can take shape through moving image, digital media and contemporary visual language.

Our work begins with the cultural context behind a story — the places, materials, practices and memories that give it meaning. From there, we explore how research and storytelling can move into visual form while remaining attentive to the tradition from which they emerge.

The Studio is not a separate identity from Guanyi, but part of how we engage with living heritage: creating new ways to encounter cultural knowledge through contemporary media.

Creative Directions

Different forms for cultural storytelling.

Cultural stories can take many forms. Guanyi Studio explores different ways of translating research, memory and cultural experience into contemporary visual expression.

  1. Cultural Film

Using moving image to explore cultural traditions, places and practices with attention to their context, atmosphere and human experience.

  2. Digital Storytelling

Bringing together research, narrative, image and digital media to create accessible ways of encountering cultural stories across different platforms.

  3. Creative Experiments

Exploring emerging tools, visual languages and new forms of media to discover how cultural ideas might be expressed in unexpected but thoughtful ways.

From Research to Image

Creative expression begins with understanding.

For Guanyi Studio, visual storytelling does not begin with an image. It begins with looking closely at the cultural context behind it — understanding where a tradition comes from, how it is practised and what gives it meaning.

  1. 01

    Research

Historical sources, cultural contexts and existing knowledge provide a foundation for understanding the subject before deciding how it should be represented.

  2. 02

    Context

Places, materials, practices and lived experience help reveal the relationships that give a cultural tradition its particular character.

  3. 03

    Story

Research becomes narrative by finding connections between knowledge, memory, people and place — shaping a story without reducing the tradition to a simple visual symbol.

  4. 04

    Image

Film, sound and digital media give that story visual form, creating new ways to encounter cultural knowledge while remaining attentive to its original context.

The aim is not simply to make heritage visible, but to make its context part of the story.

Creative Technology

New tools, used with cultural responsibility.

Digital tools and emerging creative technologies can open new ways of visualising, interpreting and sharing cultural stories.

At Guanyi Studio, these tools are part of the creative process rather than the purpose of the work itself. Their value lies in how thoughtfully they can support research, storytelling and visual expression while respecting the cultural context of the subject.

When generated, reconstructed or otherwise interpretive imagery is used, it should remain clearly distinguishable from documentary or historical evidence. Creative possibility should not come at the expense of cultural clarity.

Technology can extend cultural storytelling, but it should not rewrite cultural evidence.

Looking Forward

A continuing creative practice.

Guanyi Studio will continue to develop alongside Guanyi’s research, cultural projects and exploration of living heritage.

As new stories, media and creative possibilities emerge, the Studio remains a space for thoughtful experimentation — looking for contemporary forms through which cultural knowledge can be encountered, understood and carried forward.
